​The Psychology Of Coaching

Health Coaching Models​

​A health coach has one interest in mind: keep you in a state of wellness, or get you there if need be. The health coach assists individuals in moving from "where they are now" to "where they want to be or envision themselves to be." Coaching provides a supportive relationship between the coach and the person who wants to make a change. That connection empowers the person being coached to recognize and draw on his or her own innate ability and resources to make lasting changes for better health and well-being. Health coaching supports and helps individuals to change unhealthy lifestyle behaviors. The coach and individual work in partnership to facilitate healthy lifestyle changes using evidence-based behavioral methods including:

2. Active listening
3. Trans-theoretical model (e.g. stages of change)
4. Decisional balance
5. Exploration of health values
6. Self-efficacy
7. Positive psychology (e.g. strengths-based approach, solution-focused)


​​​​NLP, Neuro-Semantics & Meta-Coaching Models 

Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) began as a model of how we communicate to ourselves and others which was developed by Richard Bandler and John Grinder. This model explains how we process the information that comes into us from the outside. The belief is that "The map is not the territory." And so the internal representations that we make about an outside event are not necessarily the event itself.

​​​​Neuro-Semantics is an inter-disciplinary field built upon the work of Alfred Korzybski in General Semantics, Gregory Bateson as an Anthropologist and System thinker, Bandler and Grinder in NLP who created a Communication Model for modeling human excellence based on Cognitive Behavioral premises from George Miller, Noam Chomsky, and many others. Neuro-Semantics also grew out of the work of L. Michael Hall in modeling the special kind of consciousness or mind that we humans have— self-reflexive consciousness. So, in Neuro-Semantics, we focus primarily on the human meaning-making powers and potentials and how we actualize them in our everyday actions, hence the two axes that creates the Self-Actualization Quadrants — Meaning and Performance. Coaching embodies the idea that we are made for change, growth, learning, and ongoing development, what's called positive and/or self-actualizing psychology.

​​Self-Actualization Models of Neuro-Semantics include:

​• The Self-Actualization Matrix — The Pyramid Embedded Matrix that transforms the Pyramid into a Volcano of energy.

The Self-Actualization Quadrants — based on the Meaning and Performance Axes.

The Construct, the Crucible, and the Zone of Self-Actualization — defining the unleashing process (as detailed inUnleashed, 2007)

The Meta-States Model — Modeling self-reflexive consciousness and the multiple layers of awareness that make up the frames in the back of the mind.

Meta-Coaching Models:

​​​Meta-Coaching provides the most cutting-edge communication available in the world today. Developed by Dr. L Michael Hall, Meta-Coaching is grounded in the cognitive behavioral sciences of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) and Neuro-Semantics. Meta-Coaching transcends traditional Performance Coaching taking Coach and client to higher levels of Development and Transformation. That is why it is called 'meta' meaning a higher level. A Masterful Coach will have theoretical knowledge and advanced skill in six crucial processes including:
